The local mix
What actually grows here
Southeastern Massachusetts is a specific set of trees failing in a specific set of storms. Knowing which one is over your roof is most of the job.
Eastern white pine
The first tree down in a nor'easter. Shallow-rooted, holds its needles all winter so the whole crown loads with wet snow, and brittle enough that big limbs snap before the trunk does.
Red and white oak
Heavy, long-lived and usually the biggest thing on the property. The failures we see are included bark at a main fork and long limbs reaching out over a roof.
Red maple
Everywhere around here, fast-growing, and prone to co-dominant stems that split down the middle in a storm. Often the tree that is already leaning toward the driveway.
Pitch pine and scrub oak
The coastal barrens mix as you get toward the water. Smaller, tougher, and usually a clearing job rather than a removal.
